Dictatorship

/ˈdɪkteɪtərˌʃɪp/ noun

Definition

A form of government where absolute power is concentrated in a single leader or small group, typically maintained through force and without the consent of the governed. Dictatorships suppress political opposition and individual freedoms to maintain control.

Etymology

From Latin 'dictator,' originally a temporary Roman magistrate given emergency powers during crises. The term evolved from this legitimate Roman office to describe any ruler with absolute power, gaining negative connotations as democratic ideals spread.

Kelly Says

History's dictators from Caesar to Hitler to Pinochet show how emergency powers can become permanent and how charismatic leaders can exploit crisis to dismantle democratic institutions. The Roman precedent is particularly ironic since the original dictator was supposed to save the republic, not destroy it.
