Differentiable

/ˌdɪfərˈɛnʃəbəl/ adjective

Definition

In mathematics, describing a function that has a derivative at every point, or something that can be smoothly differentiated.

Etymology

From 'differentiate' (to find the derivative) plus '-able' (capable of being). 'Differentiate' evolved from Medieval Latin 'differentiare' based on 'differentia' (distinction).

Kelly Says

In machine learning and AI, differentiable functions are ESSENTIAL—neural networks only work because we can calculate how to change weights using derivatives! Without differentiability, modern AI wouldn't exist. It's the secret sauce.
