Definition
A person who cultivates an area of interest without real commitment or knowledge; someone who dabbles in a subject superficially rather than pursuing serious study.
Etymology
From Italian 'dilettante,' literally meaning 'delighting,' from 'dilettare' (to delight). Originally referred to lovers of the arts, but evolved to suggest someone who enjoys something casually without deep commitment or expertise.
Kelly Says
A dilettante is like someone who 'delights' in sampling everything but never commits to mastering anything - they're the intellectual equivalent of someone who takes one bite of every dessert but never finishes a whole piece. They delight in variety over depth.
