Definition
Plural form of diphthong; multiple vowel sounds that each blend two different vowel positions.
Etymology
From Greek 'di-' (two) + 'phthongos' (sound), pluralized with English '-s'. This simple plural refers to any number of two-sound vowel combinations.
Kelly Says
English has about 8-10 major diphthongs depending on your accent, while some languages have zero—which is why English pronunciation seems impossibly complicated to learners from countries with pure vowel systems!
