Diplopod

/ˈdɪp.ləˌpɑd/ noun

Definition

An animal of the class Diplopoda, commonly known as a millipede, which has two pairs of legs per body segment.

Etymology

From Greek diplo- (double) and pous (foot). The term literally means 'double foot' and refers to the distinctive anatomical feature that distinguishes millipedes from their centipede relatives.

Kelly Says

Millipedes aren't actually trying to have a thousand legs—most have between 80 and 400 legs total—but the name comes from people overestimating! The 'diplo' part is perfectly accurate though: each segment truly has two pairs of legs, unlike centipedes which have one pair.
