Discommodate

/ˌdɪskəˈmɒdeɪt/ verb

Definition

To cause discomfort, inconvenience, or trouble to someone; to disturb or upset.

Etymology

From dis- + accommodate (from Latin accommodare, 'to make fit or adjust'). Rather than accommodating or adjusting for someone's comfort, this means doing the opposite—creating discomfort.

Kelly Says

It's interesting that 'accommodate' became such a common word while its opposite, 'discommodate,' virtually disappeared from English—we just use 'inconvenience' instead, but 'discommodate' has this wonderfully old-fashioned sting to it.
