A break or gap in continuity; a point where something is interrupted or changes abruptly. In mathematics, a point where a function is not continuous.
Etymology
From Medieval Latin 'discontinuitas', formed from 'dis-' (apart) + 'continuitas' (continuity). The mathematical sense developed in the 18th century with advances in calculus, while geological applications emerged in the 19th century to describe rock layer interruptions.

The most famous discontinuity in Earth science is the Mohorovičić discontinuity (or 'Moho'), discovered in 1909, which marks the boundary between Earth's crust and mantle. In mathematics, discontinuities can be fascinating - some functions can have infinitely many breaks in arbitrarily small intervals, challenging our intuition about smoothness.
