Disdeify

/dɪsˈdiːɪfaɪ/ verb

Definition

To remove divine status from something; to strip of divine qualities or godhood; to make less than divine.

Etymology

From dis- (reversal prefix) + deify (to make divine, from de- + -fy, from Latin facere to make). This rare verb creates the opposite of deification.

Kelly Says

Disdeify appears in religious and philosophical texts discussing how cultures stop worshipping things as gods—like when Rome stopped deifying emperors or when societies move away from nature worship—it's the opposite of what humans naturally do!
