Disgraced

/dɪsˈɡreɪst/ adjective, verb (past tense)

Definition

Having lost respect or honor due to shameful behavior; to bring shame or dishonor to someone.

Etymology

From dis- (opposite/reversal) + grace (from Latin 'gratia' meaning favor, charm, goodwill). 'Grace' became associated with honor and dignity, so removing it means losing respect.

Kelly Says

Interestingly, 'grace' originally meant a gift freely given, but over time it also meant the dignity and respect you earn—so to disgrace someone is to publicly remove both the gift and the dignity at once.
