Disorientation

/ˌdɪsˌɔːrɪənˈteɪʃən/ noun

Definition

A confused state where someone doesn't know where they are, what time it is, or who they are; loss of sense of direction.

Etymology

From 'dis-' (remove, reverse) and 'orientation' (from Latin 'oriens' meaning east, the direction the sun rises). 'Orient' originally meant to face east or find direction. Adding 'dis-' creates the opposite: losing your directional sense entirely.

Kelly Says

Ancient people called east 'the orient' because that's where the sun rises and gave you direction—literally the direction of 'origin.' So 'disorientation' means you've lost your sunrise, your sense of which way is which! The word reveals how deeply navigation is tied to our sense of reality—lose your bearings and your whole world becomes confusing.
