Disoxygenate

/ˌdɪsˈɑːksɪdʒəneɪt/ verb

Definition

To remove oxygen from something, especially blood or water; to make less oxygenated.

Etymology

From dis- + oxygenate (from oxygen + -ate). Oxygenate means to add oxygen, so disoxygenate means to remove it.

Kelly Says

Medical researchers track disoxygenation in tissue to understand heart attacks—when blood can't deliver oxygen, tissues literally gasp and die!
