Definition
Spread widely, especially information, ideas, or disease. Distributed broadly across a wide area or among many people.
Etymology
From Latin 'disseminatus', past participle of 'disseminare' meaning 'to sow seeds widely', from 'dis-' (apart) and 'semen' (seed). The metaphor of scattering seeds for spreading ideas emerged in the 17th century.
Kelly Says
The agricultural metaphor is perfect - just as a farmer scatters seeds hoping some will take root in fertile ground, ideas are disseminated with the hope they'll flourish in receptive minds. Both require the right conditions to grow.
