Dissimulate

/dɪˈsɪmjəleɪt/ verb

Definition

To hide or disguise one's true feelings, intentions, or character; to pretend or act falsely.

Etymology

From Latin dissimulatus, past participle of dissimulare (dis- 'opposite' + simulare 'to imitate/pretend'). While simulare means 'to pretend,' dissimulare means 'to pretend to be the opposite' or to hide reality. This word has been used since Roman times to describe deception.

Kelly Says

Dissimulate is what poker players do perfectly—they dissimulate their hand strength with their expressions and behavior, making opponents believe the opposite of the truth. It's deception through misdirection, not lying.
