Dissolve

/dɪˈzɒlv/ verb

Definition

To dissolve is to mix a solid into a liquid so completely that it seems to disappear, forming a solution. It can also mean to end or break up something like a group, agreement, or problem.

Etymology

From Latin 'dissolvere' meaning 'to loosen apart, disunite', from 'dis-' and 'solvere' meaning 'to loosen'. The idea moved from physically loosening to ending relationships or organizations.

Kelly Says

When salt dissolves, it doesn’t vanish; it hides in plain sight, spread through the water. Socially, when a group 'dissolves', the people don’t vanish either—their connections just loosen until the shape is gone.
