Dovish

/ˈdʌvɪʃ/ adjective

Definition

Favoring peace and non-aggressive solutions; opposed to warfare and military action, especially in politics and international relations.

Etymology

From dove (symbol of peace since ancient times) plus -ish. Popularized in the 1960s as the opposite of 'hawkish' during debates about the Vietnam War.

Kelly Says

The dove as a peace symbol goes back to Noah's Ark in the Bible, but 'dovish' vs. 'hawkish' as political terms only became common during the Cold War!
