Definition
A tennis shot hit with minimal pace and heavy underspin, designed to land just over the net and bounce very low, forcing the opponent to run forward quickly. It's a tactical shot used to change the pace and position of play.
Etymology
Compound of 'drop' (from Old English 'droppian') meaning to fall, and 'shot'. The tennis technique was developed in the early 1900s as players sought ways to counter power-baseline games.
