Duranta

/dʊˈræntə/ noun

Definition

A tropical shrub or small tree with delicate purple-blue flowers, commonly grown as an ornamental plant.

Etymology

Named after Castor Durantes, a 16th-century Italian physician and botanist. The plant genus was named in his honor by Carl Linnaeus.

Kelly Says

Despite being named after a European botanist, duranta plants are native to tropical America and thrive in hot climates—a perfect example of how plant names honor people rather than origins!
