Dyer

/ˈdaɪər/ noun

Definition

A person whose occupation is dyeing cloth, yarn, or other materials with color.

Etymology

From Old English 'deagere,' from 'deah' (dye) plus agent suffix. Dyeing was one of humanity's earliest specialized crafts, with evidence dating back to ancient civilizations.

Kelly Says

Medieval dyers were powerful guild members because certain colors were extremely expensive - purple dye from murex shells cost more than gold, which is why it became associated with royalty. A good dyer guarded their color recipes as closely as modern companies protect their trade secrets.
