Ecclesiasticus

/ɪˌkliːziˈæstɪkəs/ noun

Definition

A book of the biblical Apocrypha (also called Sirach), containing wisdom and moral teachings written by the Jewish sage Ben Sira.

Etymology

The Latin title of the Greek work 'Sophia Jesou Sirak' (Wisdom of Jesus son of Sirach). Called 'Ecclesiasticus' meaning 'the churchman's book' because it was widely used in church teaching.

Kelly Says

Ecclesiasticus got its name because the church loved it so much they called it 'the churchman's book'—it's basically ancient Jewish advice literature that Christians thought was perfect for training clergy!
