Definition
A dark purple or sometimes white vegetable with smooth skin and soft flesh, often used in cooking.
Etymology
Named for early varieties that were small, white, and shaped like eggs. The word is mainly used in American and some other Englishes; British English commonly says 'aubergine', from French.

The purple eggplants you see now got their name from much earlier white, egg-shaped ones. The same plant carries three very different names across English—'eggplant', 'aubergine', and 'brinjal'—showing how food travels through cultures.
