Definition
A genus of wild grass related to wheat, native to the Mediterranean and Western Asia, with spiky seed heads.
Etymology
From Greek 'aigilops', possibly derived from 'aix' (goat) + 'ops' (eye), though the etymology is uncertain. The genus name was applied to these grass species by early botanists.
Kelly Says
Egilops species contain genetic material that wheat breeders have used to create disease-resistant wheat varieties—wild relatives of crops often hold the genetic 'keys' to improving modern agriculture.
