Definition
In Eastern Orthodox Christian liturgy, a litany or extended prayer petition, often accompanied by the raising of arms in a cross-like position.
Etymology
From Greek 'ektenes' meaning stretched out or extended; used in Orthodox Christian worship to describe prolonged intercessory prayers.
Kelly Says
The ektene is a beautiful liturgical form where the priest and people stretch their prayers out toward heaven both physically and verbally—the body and soul praying together.
