Definition
A genus of small aquatic or semi-aquatic flowering plants belonging to the Elatinaceae family, commonly called waterworts.
Etymology
From Greek 'elation,' possibly related to the delicate or elastic nature of the plants. The genus name was formalized in Linnaean taxonomy, becoming the type genus for the entire Elatinaceae family.
Kelly Says
Elatine plants are so small (often just a few centimeters) that early botanists almost missed them entirely—yet they're ecologically important in wetlands and represent a whole family that most people have never heard of despite walking past them constantly.
