Definition
A place of great wealth or opportunity; originally a legendary city of gold sought by Spanish conquistadors in South America.
Etymology
Spanish 'el dorado' meaning 'the golden one,' originally referring to a Muisca ceremony where a chief covered in gold dust made offerings in Lake Guatavita. Became generalized to mean any place of fabulous wealth.
Kelly Says
El Dorado represents one of history's most powerful myths—the transformation of a real indigenous ritual into a European fantasy that drove centuries of exploration and exploitation in the Americas.
