Electrogenic

/ɪˌlɛktrəʊˈdʒɛnɪk/ adjective

Definition

Capable of producing or generating electrical potential, especially in biological systems like cells and organisms.

Etymology

From electro- + genic (Greek, producing). A newer term than electrogenetic, it became standard in molecular biology to describe ion pumps and proteins that create electrical gradients.

Kelly Says

The sodium-potassium pump in your cell membranes is electrogenic—it pumps ions across the membrane using energy, and this creates the tiny electrical voltage that lets your neurons fire and think!
