Elongation

/ɪˌlɔŋˈɡeɪʃən/ noun

Definition

The angular separation between a planet and the Sun as seen from Earth, determining when and where the planet is visible in the sky. Maximum elongation occurs when inner planets appear farthest from the Sun.

Etymology

From Latin 'elongatio' meaning 'a lengthening' or 'extension,' from 'e' (out) and 'longus' (long). The astronomical usage developed in the 17th century as astronomers began precise measurements of planetary positions relative to the Sun.

Kelly Says

Venus can never appear more than 48 degrees from the Sun due to its orbit, which is why it's only visible as the 'morning star' or 'evening star,' never in the middle of the night! Mercury's maximum elongation is just 28 degrees, making it notoriously difficult to spot.
