Embryonic

/ˌɛmbriˈɒnɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to an embryo in early developmental stages, or describing something in its earliest, undeveloped phase.

Etymology

From Greek 'embryon' meaning 'young one' or 'fetus,' combined with the suffix '-ic.' The Greek root comes from 'en-' (in) and 'bryein' (to swell or teem), referring to growth within.

Kelly Says

Embryonic development follows remarkably similar patterns across vastly different species - fish, birds, and mammals all look surprisingly alike in their earliest stages. This observation, first noted by embryologist Karl Ernst von Baer, helped support evolutionary theory by showing our shared ancestry.
