As electromagnetic pulse, formed from 'electromagnetic' (Greek 'elektron' + 'magnet' from Greek 'magnētis') and 'pulse' from Latin 'pulsus' meaning 'a beating'. The military acronym emerged during Cold War nuclear testing in the 1960s.

EMP weapons represent one of modern warfare's most sophisticated threats - they can disable entire power grids and electronic systems without causing direct physical harm to people. The concept gained public attention through science fiction but reflects real vulnerabilities in our electronics-dependent civilization.
