Emu

/ˈimu/ noun

Definition

A large flightless bird native to Australia, the second-largest living bird species in the world.

Etymology

From Portuguese 'ema,' borrowed from Tupi (South American indigenous language). The name was transferred from the South American rhea to the Australian bird by early explorers.

Kelly Says

Emus can run up to 30 mph and are surprisingly good swimmers despite being flightless. Australia once declared war on emus in 1932 (the 'Great Emu War') when they were damaging crops - and the emus essentially won!
