Encore

/ˈɑːŋkɔːr/ (US), /ˈɒŋkɔː/ (UK) noun

Definition

An extra performance, such as a song or piece of music, given at the end of a show because the audience asks for more.

Etymology

From French *encore* meaning 'again, still.' Audiences in French theaters would shout 'Encore!' to request another performance. English simply borrowed the word along with the custom.

Kelly Says

An 'encore' is basically the audience refusing to accept that the show is over. The word is just 'again' in French, but on stage it turns into a shared secret: 'We all know this was the end, but let’s pretend it isn’t.'
