Endarch

/ˈɛndɑːrk/ noun

Definition

In botany, a plant structure where the primary xylem (water-conducting tissue) develops inward from the center toward the edges.

Etymology

From endo- (within) + arche (origin, beginning, from Greek arkhē). This botanical term describes the direction of development of vascular tissue in plants.

Kelly Says

Plants are like tiny hydraulic engineers with xylem that develops in different directions—'endarch' plants develop their water pipes from inside out, which is the opposite of how many other plants grow their plumbing.
