Endocarpic

/ˌɛndoʊˈkɑrpɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to or describing the innermost layer of fruit wall that develops from the ovary wall of a flowering plant.

Etymology

From Greek 'endo-' (within) + 'karpos' (fruit) + '-ic' (relating to). Botanists use this term to distinguish the inner fruit layer from the middle (mesocarp) and outer (exocarp) layers.

Kelly Says

The endocarpic layer of a peach is the hard pit protecting the seed—it's the same tissue that becomes the thin skin inside a grape or the tough shell of a walnut.
