A genus of fungi characterized by spores produced internally within a sac-like structure rather than externally on a stalk.
Etymology
From 'endo-' (within) and 'myces' from 'mykes' (fungus in Greek). This taxonomic term emerged in 19th-century mycology as scientists classified fungi by their spore-production methods.
