Endosteum

/ˌɛndoʊˈstiəm/ noun

Definition

The thin, vascular membrane lining the inner surface of bones; the internal periosteum covering the medullary cavity.

Etymology

From endo- (within) + osteum (bone), from Greek osteon. Anatomical term standardized in medical education in the late 1800s as microscopic bone structure became better understood.

Kelly Says

Your endosteum is constantly rebuilding bone from the inside out—it's essentially your body's construction crew remodeling your skeleton throughout your entire life!
