Plural of endothelium; the thin layers of cells that line the insides of blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and the heart.
Etymology
From endothelium (endo- + Greek thele 'nipple' + -ium). Term coined in late 1800s by anatomists studying microscopic structures.
