Endowment

/ɪnˈdaʊmənt/ noun

Definition

Money or property donated to an institution for ongoing support, or natural abilities and talents someone possesses. The donated funds generate income to support the institution's mission.

Etymology

From Old French 'endouer' meaning to provide with a dower (marriage portion). Extended from providing for wives to providing for institutions. The meaning of natural gifts developed from the idea of being 'endowed' by nature or God.

Kelly Says

Harvard has the world's largest university endowment at over $50 billion - so large it could operate indefinitely on investment income alone! The concept originated with medieval monasteries that needed sustainable income to continue their religious and scholarly work.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Endowments historically excluded women from inheritance and institutional funding. Charitable/academic endowments were male-controlled mechanisms of wealth transfer and power.

Inclusive Usage

Use 'endowment' descriptively when accurate, but acknowledge historical gendered access in context.

Inclusive Alternatives

["fund","grant","allocation","contribution"]

Empowerment Note

Women's philanthropic contributions—historically underrecognized—now drive significant endowment growth; modern naming practices increasingly credit women donors.
