Enhydrous

/ɛnˈhaɪdrəs/ adjective

Definition

Containing water trapped inside, like certain minerals or gems that have water enclosed within their crystal structure.

Etymology

From Greek en- (in) + hydro- (water) + -ous (full of). The term was coined in mineralogy to describe minerals like enhydros opals that visibly contain water bubbles inside them.

Kelly Says

Some opals and agates literally have tiny oceans trapped inside them—water that's been sealed in for millions of years! Ancient people thought these were magical because they could watch the water bubble move when you tilted the stone.
