Definition
A person who asks questions or seeks information; one who investigates or conducts inquiries. Also refers to certain newspaper titles.
Etymology
From Old French 'enquerre' meaning 'to seek out' or 'to ask', ultimately from Latin 'inquirere' (in- + quaerere 'to seek'). The spelling with 'en-' rather than 'in-' reflects the French influence, though both forms coexist in English.
Kelly Says
The Cincinnati Enquirer, founded in 1841, is one of the oldest newspapers in America still publishing today. The word beautifully captures the essence of journalism - professional enquirers whose job is to ask the questions the public wants answered, though the rise of 'citizen journalism' has made us all potential enquirers.
