Definition
A person whose job is to provide amusement or enjoyment to others, especially through performance. Includes actors, musicians, comedians, and other performers.
Etymology
From Old French entretenir meaning 'to hold together, maintain', from entre- 'between' + tenir 'to hold'. The meaning shifted from 'maintaining hospitality' to 'providing amusement' by the 17th century.
Kelly Says
The word 'entertainer' originally meant someone who maintained guests between meals - literally keeping them occupied! This hospitality role evolved into our modern concept of performance entertainment.
