Definition
The quality or state of being enthusiastic; passionate and eager interest in something.
Etymology
From enthusiastic (from Greek enthousiastikos, 'inspired by a god') + -al + -ness. The suffix -ness converts adjectives to abstract nouns expressing a quality or condition.
Kelly Says
This word is a perfect example of how English allows us to stack suffixes almost infinitely—we could theoretically keep adding them! The original Greek root literally meant 'having a god within,' which is why enthusiasts seem so possessed by passion.
