Entoptic

/ɛnˈtɑːptɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to or describing visual sensations that originate from within the eye rather than from external light sources.

Etymology

Greek 'entos' (within) + 'optikos' (relating to vision). Coined in ophthalmology in the 1800s to describe internal eye phenomena.

Kelly Says

When you see phosphenes—those starbursts of light when you rub your closed eyes—you're experiencing entoptic phenomena, which means your brain is literally seeing its own eye's internal structure and electrical activity.
