Definition
A ballet jump where the dancer rapidly crosses and uncrosses the legs in the air, creating a complex weaving pattern.
Etymology
From French 'entrechat,' derived from 'entre-' (between) + 'chat' (a debated etymology, possibly from Italian 'gatto' meaning cat, or from the pattern resembling cat claws). The term refers to the leg-crossing action.
Kelly Says
Ballerinas can perform entrechats of incredible complexity—an entrechat huit (eight) involves the legs crossing eight times in a single jump, which requires perfect timing and strength; it's the acrobatic poetry of classical ballet.
