Definition
A hypothetical primitive organism or earliest form of life that existed at the dawn of biological evolution on Earth.
Etymology
From Greek eo- (early, dawn) plus -biont (from bios 'life'). A theoretical term for the most basic living thing before modern cells evolved.
Kelly Says
Eobionts are probably not real—they're more like a thought experiment—but they highlight a huge mystery: what exactly counts as 'alive' when you're talking about RNA molecules that might have preceded cells?
