Epee

/ˈeɪpeɪ/ noun

Definition

A type of sword used in fencing, characterized by its triangular blade, large bell guard, and the heaviest weight among the three fencing weapons. In epee fencing, the entire body is a valid target area.

Etymology

From French 'épée,' meaning 'sword,' derived from Latin 'spatha' (broad sword). The modern epee evolved from the dueling swords of the 19th century and represents the closest fencing weapon to historical sword fighting.

Kelly Says

The epee is the most 'realistic' of fencing weapons because it allows double touches—both fencers can score simultaneously, just like in an actual sword duel where both combatants might wound each other. This creates unique tactical situations where timing and distance become even more critical than in other fencing disciplines!
