The outermost layer of a fruit, also called the skin or peel, that protects the seeds and flesh inside.
Etymology
From Greek 'epi' (upon) + 'karpos' (fruit). The term became standardized in botanical terminology during the 18th century when scientists systematically classified fruit structures.
