Definition
The external or outer layer of cells in a protozoan or other organism, or the outer cell membrane and associated structures.
Etymology
From Greek 'epi' (upon) + 'kytos' (cell). This term emerged in protozoology and cell biology in the early 20th century as microscopy revealed cellular organization.
Kelly Says
Just like you have skin on the outside, many microscopic organisms like protozoans have an epicyte—a protective outer layer that can have cilia or flagella for swimming around!
