Epideictic

/ˌɛpɪˈdaɪktɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to rhetoric or oratory meant to display skill and impress an audience, rather than to persuade or debate a particular point.

Etymology

From Greek 'epideiknynai' (to display, exhibit). Aristotle used this term to classify one of the three types of rhetoric, referring to ceremonial or demonstration speech.

Kelly Says

Epideictic rhetoric is all about showing off—think of a graduation speech or an awards ceremony where the speaker isn't trying to win an argument, just impress and entertain the crowd!
