Etymology
From Greek 'epithalamion,' combining 'epi' (upon) and 'thalamos' (bridal chamber). The suffix '-ia' creates a plural noun, with 'epithalamia' being an alternative plural form to 'epithalamiums.'

An epithalamia often included explicit fertility blessings and sexual imagery that would shock modern wedding guests—ancient and medieval poets saw no shame in explicitly wishing the couple many children and a robust married life.
