Definition
Plural of epithelium; the thin layers of cells that cover the outside of the body and line internal organs.
Etymology
From epithelium (Greek epi- 'upon' + thele 'nipple'), named because ancient Greeks thought these cells resembled small breasts under a microscope.
Kelly Says
Your epithelium is working right now—it's the protective layer that covers your skin, lines your mouth, stomach, and lungs, and replaces itself roughly every 2-3 weeks!
