Definition
A mathematical curve traced by a point on the circumference of a circle as it rolls around the outside of another circle, creating a flower-like or looped pattern.
Etymology
From Greek 'epi-' (upon) and 'trochoid' (wheel-like), itself from 'trochos' (wheel). The mathematical term was coined to describe the curve created by rolling motion.

Epitrochoids are the same curves that spirograph toys create—that tool you probably used as a kid where you put a pen in a spinning wheel and traced beautiful patterns was literally drawing epitrochoids and hypocycloids.
